The enzyme cleaner to keep under your sink — and the one to skip

Ordinary soap makes a urine stain look clean and smell clean for about a day. Then it comes back, and your cat goes back to the same spot. An enzyme cleaner is the fix, but only two things about it matter: that you buy enough of it, and that you leave it wet long enough to work.

Best value

Nature's Miracle Dog Stain & Odour Remover — 128 oz

CAD $31.99Checked 2026-09-08 · www.petvalu.ca

Four times the liquid of the standard bottle, at nothing like four times the price. It's sold under the dog line, so check the label lists the surfaces you need before you order — what you're buying is a large volume of the same maker's enzymatic cleaner. Get the jug if you have a repeat spot, a puppy, or more than one animal: you need to soak the area properly, and people who ration a small bottle under-apply and then blame the product.

Hard floors

Made for sealed floors, where the problem isn't the surface but the grout line and the gap at the baseboard the liquid ran into. Use this rather than a carpet formula, and don't flood a hardwood seam.

Everything that goes in the wash

The in-wash piece for the towels, blankets and covers that come out of an accident, and the option to choose if you want one brand handling the whole house. It's the priciest bottle here; if cost per load is what you're optimising, our urine-smell guide lists Skout's Honor Laundry Booster, which is sold by the number of loads it covers.

Do it in this order

  1. Blot, don't rub. Press a towel down hard and lift. Rubbing pushes urine deeper into the carpet backing, which is exactly where the smell survives.
  2. Rinse with cool water and blot again. Get the bulk of it out before any product goes down.
  3. Apply far more cleaner than looks necessary. Urine spreads under a carpet: the stain you see is smaller than the stain that's there. Treat a wider circle.
  4. Leave it wet for the time on the label. This is the step everyone skips. Enzymes need contact time and moisture. Cover the patch with a damp towel so it doesn't dry in ten minutes.
  5. Air-dry, then check with your nose at floor level. Re-treat once if needed.

Why plain cleaning fails, and why ammonia makes it worse

Cat urine odour isn't ordinary dirt. Researchers at RIKEN traced it to cauxin and felinine — compounds cats produce that keep releasing the smell as they break down. That's why a spot can smell fine when dry and smell awful on a humid day.

The ASPCA is explicit on the other half: use an enzymatic cleaner, and avoid ammonia-based cleaners on soiled areas. Ammonia is a component of urine smell. To a cat, cleaning with it is closer to a signature than a scrub, and it invites a repeat. Check the label of whatever multi-surface spray is already under your sink before you use it on a urine spot.

For fabrics, a laundry study by Tovey and colleagues found that washing with detergent removed considerably more cat allergen from bedding than water alone. Wash the item — don't rinse it — and follow the garment's care label rather than a blanket "hot wash" rule.

If the same spot keeps getting hit, the cleaner isn't your problem. The AAFP and ISFM feline environmental guidelines treat the litter box as part of a wider setup: how many boxes, where they are, what else is nearby. And repeated accidents can be medical. Book the vet before you buy a fifth bottle.

Common mistakes

  • Using a carpet formula on a sealed hard floor, or the reverse. They're built for different surfaces and the wrong one either streaks or soaks the seam.
  • Any ammonia-based cleaner on a urine spot. See above.
  • Scented sprays used instead of cleaning. They cover the smell for you and change nothing for the cat.
  • A steam cleaner on fresh urine. Heat sets protein into the fibre.

Common questions

What does an enzyme cleaner actually do?

An enzyme cleaner is used here to address urine stains and odour that ordinary soap leaves returning. The guide stresses using enough liquid to treat the affected area and keeping it wet for the label's contact time. Enzymes need moisture and contact time; under-applying or letting the patch dry too soon undermines the method.

Why does plain cleaning fail?

Cat urine odour is not ordinary dirt. The guide describes compounds that continue releasing smell as they break down, which helps explain why a dry spot can smell again on a humid day. Urine also spreads beneath carpet, so cleaning only the visible mark can miss the affected area.

Why does ammonia make it worse?

Ammonia is a component of urine smell. The guide explains that using it on a soiled area can invite the cat back to the same spot, rather than resolving the problem. The cited ASPCA advice is to use an enzymatic cleaner and avoid ammonia-based cleaners. Check your existing cleaner's label.

Do they work on old stains?

For old marks, the guide points to Nature's Miracle Oxy Formula Set-In Cat Stain Destroyer, which the manufacturer sells specifically for set-in stains. Its suggested sequence is that product on the mark, followed by an enzyme cleaner on the smell. These are manufacturer descriptions; we have not used these bottles at home.
