Cat urine smell: what actually removes it, and when to call the vet instead

A urine spot you've cleaned twice and can still smell on a humid day isn't a cleaning failure — it's the wrong product, or not enough of it, or a cat telling you something. Here's the bottle to buy, the method that works, and the point at which no bottle will help.

Our picks

Best for most spills

The biggest bottle in this group at the lowest price, made for exactly this job. Buy this if you're buying one thing. Volume matters more than people expect: urine spreads under the carpet, and the commonest mistake is treating a patch smaller than the actual stain.

Old, dried-in stains

This one is sold specifically for set-in stains, where the standard sprays are aimed at fresh messes. For something that's been behind the bookcase for a month, start with the oxy formula on the mark, then the enzyme cleaner for the smell.

Laundry

Sold by the number of loads it covers, for the towels, bedding and covers an accident generates. The other in-wash option in our catalogue is Nature's Miracle Laundry Boost, 32 fl oz — the matching piece if you're already running the Nature's Miracle system and want one brand through the house. Buy on cost per load or on brand consistency; both do the in-wash job.

The method that actually works

  1. Find all of it. Check dry first, then damp — a stain that's invisible dry often darkens when you mist it. Urine tracks along baseboards and under furniture.
  2. Blot hard, don't rub. Rubbing drives it into the carpet backing, which is where the smell lives.
  3. Rinse with cool water, blot again.
  4. Soak a wider circle than the stain. Under-application is the number one reason people say enzyme cleaners "don't work."
  5. Keep it wet for the full time on the label. Cover with a damp towel. This is the step that does the work.
  6. Air-dry and check at floor level. Re-treat once if the smell is still there.

Why it keeps coming back

Researchers at RIKEN traced the characteristic smell to cauxin and felinine — compounds in cat urine that keep releasing odour as they break down. That's the reason a spot can seem fine when dry and return on a humid day, and the reason a surface clean with soap buys you about twenty-four hours.

The ASPCA's guidance is to use an enzymatic cleaner and to avoid ammonia-based cleaners on soiled areas — ammonia is part of what urine smells like, and cleaning with it reads to a cat as a reason to come back. Check what's already under your sink.

When to stop buying cleaner and phone the vet

If the same cat is going outside the box repeatedly, the ASPCA lists medical as well as behavioural causes of house-soiling. Urinary tract infections, crystals and blockages are common, painful, and in male cats a blockage is an emergency. No product on this page addresses any of that.

Then the setup. Ohio State's Indoor Pet Initiative recommends scooping daily and washing the box weekly; the AAFP and ISFM guidelines treat the box as one of a set of resources whose number and location matter. A cat avoiding a box that's dirty, too small, or in a bad spot is behaving reasonably.

So: one accident, clean it properly. A pattern — vet first, then the setup, then the cleaner.

Common mistakes

  • Ammonia-based cleaners on a urine spot.
  • A steam cleaner on fresh urine. Heat sets protein into the fibre.
  • Air fresheners as a substitute for cleaning. They work on you, not on the cat.
  • Treating a repeat spot as a cleaning problem. Before the fourth bottle, get the cat checked and look at the box. Then clean — with the right product and enough of it.

Common questions

Why does the smell keep coming back?

The guide describes urine compounds that keep releasing odour as they break down, so a spot can seem fine when dry and smell again in humid weather. Surface cleaning may miss urine beneath carpet or along baseboards. Treating too small an area or using too little cleaner also leaves the problem unresolved.

How long does an enzyme cleaner need?

Keep the treated area wet for the full time stated on the product label. The guide does not give a universal dwell time. Cover the patch with a damp towel, then let it air-dry and check at floor level. Treat it again if the smell remains after drying.

What should I not use on cat urine?

Avoid ammonia-based cleaners on urine spots: the guide explains that ammonia is part of urine smell and can encourage a return to the same place. It also advises against steam on fresh urine and against using air fresheners instead of cleaning. Blot rather than rub, then rinse with cool water.

When should I call a vet instead?

Call a vet if your cat repeatedly goes outside the box or is straining. The guide notes that house-soiling can have medical as well as behavioural causes, and that a blockage in a male cat is an emergency. A pattern of accidents calls for a vet, then a review of the litter-box setup.
