The best pet vacuum in Canada — pick by your floors, not by the price

A pet vacuum is any vacuum with the two things fur actually needs: a motorised brush that lifts hair out of fibre, and a filter that holds fine dander instead of blowing it back out. Every machine sold to pet owners promises both. Which one works in your home is decided by something the ads never mention: what's on your floor, and how many stairs you have. Get that right and a mid-priced machine will beat the flagship.

Our picks

Best for most homes

A corded upright with a motorised brush roll. If your home is mostly carpet or area rugs, this is the shape of machine you want: constant power, a wide path, and enough weight behind the brush to lift hair that's worked its way into the pile. Corded means you never stop halfway through the living room.

Best on bare floors and stairs

A bagless canister. On hardwood, tile and stairs, a canister wins because you carry a light hose head instead of dragging a heavy upright behind you. It costs more than double the BISSELL — buy it if your home is mostly hard floor, if you have several flights of stairs, or if someone in the house has allergies and you want a sealed system.

Not a replacement for a full-size vacuum. It's the one you grab for the daily two-minute pass over the spot beside the cat tree, which is what actually keeps a pet home under control. Buy it as a second vacuum, or as your only one in a small apartment.

Also in the same family

The Rewind adds automatic cord retraction, which matters more than it sounds if you vacuum a large main floor daily. The DualBrush adds a second brush for mixed carpet and hard floor in one pass. Same core machine as our main pick — pick by which annoyance you want removed.

Shark PowerDetect Cordless Vacuum Clean & Empty System — IP3251C

Cordless with a self-emptying base, so the bin doesn't need touching for weeks. This is the one to buy if you want the whole job automated and the budget is there. It was out of stock at the retailer we last checked — worth setting a restock alert rather than settling, if this is the machine you want.

Choose in this order

  1. Floor type. Mostly carpet → upright with a brush roll. Mostly hard floor and stairs → canister. Mixed, small space → cordless stick.
  2. Stairs. More than one flight changes the answer. Weight in your hand beats suction on paper.
  3. Where it will live. A vacuum stored in the basement gets used once a week; one that sits in a closet on the main floor gets used daily. Daily wins.
  4. Budget last, not first. Work down from the shape of machine your floors need. A mid-priced upright on carpet beats the most expensive cordless on carpet, and the reverse is true on stairs.

What HEPA does, and what it doesn't

The US EPA's asthma guidance recommends vacuuming carpets and upholstered furniture with a HEPA filter. That's a good reason to want one. It is not a promise that a "HEPA" sticker means the whole machine is sealed — air can bypass a perfect filter through a loose seam. Look for a sealed-system claim, not just a filter grade.

Air purifiers are a different machine

Two air purifiers appear in our catalogue and they are not vacuums. They do nothing about the fur on your sofa.

  • Levoit Core 300-P — CAD $169.99. 8.7 × 8.7 × 14.2 in, so it fits on a bedside table. The right size for one bedroom.
  • Shark NeverChange — HP152C — CAD $279.99. Larger, sold on a long filter life.

Buy one for the smell and the dust in a closed room in winter. Be careful about buying one for allergies: the EPA's own guide to home air cleaners treats filtration as a supplement to source control and ventilation, not a substitute. In a placebo-controlled trial, a HEPA air cleaner reduced airborne cat allergen — and the patients' symptom scores did not significantly improve. That's the honest picture, and it's better to know before you buy than after.

Common mistakes

  • Buying an air purifier to solve a pet-hair problem. Different machine, different job — buy it for room air and odour, and a vacuum for the floor.
  • Judging by suction numbers. Brush roll, sealing and how easy the bin is to empty decide whether the thing actually gets used.
  • A cordless stick as the only vacuum in a large carpeted house. Buy the cordless as the daily quick pass and a corded upright as the machine that does the real work.

Common questions

What should I look for in a vacuum for pet hair?

Start with your floors and stairs. The guide favours an upright with a brush roll for carpet, a canister for hard floors and stairs, and a cordless stick for a small mixed space. Also consider sealing, bin emptying and storage: the machine needs to be easy enough to use regularly.

Do I need a HEPA vacuum?

The EPA guidance cited here recommends a HEPA filter when vacuuming carpets and upholstered furniture. But a HEPA label does not establish that the whole vacuum is sealed: air can bypass the filter through a loose seam. Look for a sealed-system claim as well as the filter grade.

Will an air purifier help with pet hair?

An air purifier will not remove fur from your sofa or floor. The guide separates room air and odour from the cleaning job a vacuum does. Filtration may reduce airborne cat allergen, but the cited trial did not find significantly improved symptom scores. It supplements source control and ventilation.

What is the difference between air filtration and floor cleaning?

Floor cleaning removes the fur on carpets, rugs and other surfaces using a vacuum suited to those floors. Air filtration deals with room air, including airborne dust and allergen. The guide treats them as different jobs: an air purifier cannot replace a vacuum, and filtration is not a substitute for source control or ventilation.
