Getting pet hair off furniture and clothes — one cheap tool does most of it

Fur on a sofa and fur on a black sweater are two different problems, and neither is solved by the vacuum you already own. What works is a dry tool used before anything gets wet, in the right order — and the tool costs less than a month of lint rollers.

Our picks

Best for most people

Three by four inches, no refills, nothing to replace. You drag it across upholstery and it rolls the embedded hair into a rope you lift off in one piece. It's small enough to live in the car door pocket, and it's the reason we'd tell someone to stop buying sticky rollers.

In the wash

Tacky discs you throw in with the load. One detail the retailer's own listing makes clear and most buyers miss: don't use fabric softener or dryer sheets with them. They coat the disc and it stops picking anything up. If softener isn't negotiable in your house, do the hair with the Lilly Brush before the load goes in — same result, no change to your laundry routine.

Car seats, the one that lasts

Same 55-inch bench, built for dogs that ride often: heavier construction and Kurgo's fittings. If the car is part of your week — trailhead, daycare, cottage — this is the one to buy once instead of twice. For an occasional passenger, the Top Paw is plenty.

Do it in this order

  1. Dry tool first, always. Water makes fur cling to fabric. Once a hairy sweater has been through a wash cycle, the hair is woven in and you're picking it out by hand.
  2. Then the wash, with detergent. A study by Tovey and colleagues found detergent removed considerably more cat allergen from bedding than water alone. Wash it properly; don't just rinse it. Follow the garment's own care label — there's no single correct temperature for every fabric, whatever the internet says.
  3. Vacuum upholstery after, not before. The EPA's asthma guidance recommends vacuuming carpets and upholstered furniture with a HEPA filter, and it's much more effective once the surface mat of loose fur has already been lifted off.

Visible fur and allergens are not the same problem

Worth being clear about, because the products get sold as though they were. A brush removes fur you can see. Allergen is a protein that sits in household dust and stays after every visible hair is gone.

If someone in the house reacts to the cat, the honest summary of the research — a 2024 review by Beheshti, Grant and Wood — is that single measures give inconsistent results. Washing fabrics helps. Filtering room air helps with dust. Neither reliably fixes symptoms on its own, and the EPA treats air filtration as a supplement to source control and ventilation rather than a cure. An air purifier on this list will not take fur off your sofa.

Common mistakes

  • Disposable lint rollers. You buy the sheets forever; a blade tool you buy once.
  • Fabric softener alongside a laundry hair-catcher. They cancel each other out.
  • Expecting an air purifier to deal with fur on furniture. It's the right machine for room air and dust, and the wrong one for a hairy sofa — see our vacuum guide for which does what.
  • Washing a hairy item before brushing it. This is the single most common mistake and it makes the garment worse.

Common questions

What removes pet hair from a sofa?

The guide recommends a dry blade tool first, before anything gets wet. The Lilly Brush rolls embedded upholstery hair into a clump you can lift off; the longer-handled Uproot tool is presented for larger surfaces. Vacuum upholstery after lifting the loose fur. A spot cleaner is for stains underneath, not fur alone.

How do I get hair off clothes?

Remove the hair with a dry tool before putting the garment in the wash. Then wash with detergent and follow its care label rather than assuming a single temperature suits every fabric. If using FurZapper, the guide notes the retailer's warning not to combine it with fabric softener or dryer sheets.

Are visible fur and allergens the same problem?

No. A brush removes visible fur, while allergen is a protein in household dust that can remain after the hair is gone. The guide says washing fabrics and filtering room air can help, but neither reliably resolves symptoms alone. Air filtration supplements source control and ventilation; it does not remove sofa fur.

What order should I clean in?

Use a dry tool before water or washing. For washable items, follow with detergent and the garment's care instructions. For upholstery, lift the loose fur before vacuuming; the guide cites EPA advice to use a HEPA filter. Keep stain cleaning separate from fur removal when a cushion has both problems.
