Stop litter tracking through the house — in the order that actually works

Litter ends up in the hallway because of three things, and they have to be fixed in order: the box, the litter, then the mat. People buy the mat first, it helps a little, and they conclude mats don't work. Do it the other way around and the problem mostly disappears — and the fix costs less than most people expect.

Our picks

The mat we use

Amazon Basics Less-Mess Cat Litter Box Mat — 24 × 35 in, Grey

This is the one on our own floor; we measured it ourselves at 35 inches by 24. The footprint is why it works — wide enough that our cat lands on the mat, not the hardwood, on every exit. Photos and video on its page are ours.

The litter

Unscented, hard-clumping. Ohio State's litter-box guidance recommends a fine, unscented litter, and the reason matters: a scented litter is pleasant to you and often off-putting to the cat, and a cat that hesitates at the box is a cat that digs frantically and flings litter. Firm clumps also mean you remove more per scoop and refill less loose material.

Keeping the scooping honest

Litter Genie Easy Roll Cat Litter Pail

Not a tracking product on its own, but daily scooping is, and a sealed pail beside the box is what makes daily scooping actually happen.

, mesh with deep pockets and machine washable, for a bathroom where a 35-inch mat won't fit. Older cats or wet misses — Drymate Original, 20 × 28 in, absorbent with a waterproof back, and you can cut it to fit.

Scooping handled for you

Be clear about what these buy you: they automate scooping, not tracking. That's still the most useful thing on this page, because daily scooping is the biggest single lever on how much litter leaves the box — and it's the step people stop doing by week three. If you travel, work long shifts, or share a home where nobody reliably does it, an automatic box makes the habit happen without you. The PetSafe is the cheapest way in; the INSTACHEW adds app control if you want to check it from work. Pair any of them with a mat, and leave the old box out for a couple of weeks while your cat gets used to it.

Fix it in this order

  1. The box. Ohio State recommends one box per cat plus one, and roughly five centimetres of litter. Both matter here: too few boxes means each gets overused, and litter deeper than about 5 cm is simply more material available to kick out.
  2. Scoop daily. This does more for tracking than any product on this page.
  3. The litter. Unscented, clumping, filled to the recommended depth — not to the top.
  4. The mat, last. Measure the box footprint and buy a mat bigger than it, with a full step — around a foot — on the exit side. Then measure your doorway before you order the biggest one.

Two things people get wrong

A hood is not a tracking fix. Grigg and colleagues compared covered and uncovered boxes and found no clear overall preference among the cats studied, as long as the box was scooped daily. Buy the box that fits your space. Separately, Guy and colleagues found cats used the larger 86-cm boxes more than standard ones — bigger is the change worth making, not lidded.

Scattered litter and peeing outside the box are different problems. The ASPCA lists medical and behavioural causes of house-soiling, and a cat urinating outside the box needs a vet, not a mat. Don't let a shopping list delay that.

The AAFP and ISFM environmental guidelines make the broader point: where the box sits, how easy it is to get to, and what else is nearby all shape how the cat uses it. Move a box out of a noisy laundry room before you spend a dollar.

Common mistakes

  • Buying an automatic box expecting less tracking. It buys you out of scooping, which helps indirectly — but the mat and the litter are what deal with the granules. Buy it for the right reason and you'll be happy with it.
  • A mat narrower than the box. The most common mistake here.
  • Filling the box to the top. Around five centimetres is the recommendation; deeper just means more material available to kick out.
  • Scented litter as a way to avoid scooping. It covers the smell for you and can put the cat off the box entirely.

Common questions

Why does my cat track litter everywhere?

Look at the box, the litter and the mat together. Too few boxes means each gets overused, while filling a box too deeply leaves more litter available to kick out. Scented litter can put a cat off the box, and a narrow mat misses the granules that leave it.

Does the litter box itself matter more than the mat?

The guide starts with the box, before the litter and the mat. It points to research in which cats used larger boxes more than standard ones, and stresses daily scooping. An automatic box handles scooping, but it does not replace the mat and litter choices that deal with scattered granules.

Which changes should I make first?

Start with the box and scoop daily. Use unscented, clumping litter at the recommended depth rather than filling to the top. Choose the mat last: measure the box footprint and leave a full step on the exit side. Check the doorway before ordering a mat that may not fit.

Does a covered box reduce tracking?

The guide does not recommend a hood as a tracking fix. The cited comparison found no clear overall preference for covered or uncovered boxes when they were scooped daily. That finding concerns preference. The practical advice here is to focus on box size, scooping, litter and a properly sized mat.
